Bancy Kabugi Njagi, a former accountant at Tetra Pak Sacco in Nairobi, has been charged with embezzlement of over Sh27 million ($250,000) from the cooperative.
The alleged crimes took place between January 2012 and July 2021. Njagi appeared before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Ectina Rihana and denied the charges.
The prosecution claimed that Njagi was a flight risk, but her defense argued she was a law-abiding citizen who had not fled after being granted police bail.
The magistrate set a bond of Sh4 million ($38,000) with an alternative cash bail of Sh3 million ($28,000) and scheduled the next court appearance for February 15.
Njagi was also instructed to receive the witness statements and documentary evidence before the trial begins.
