Man in custody for raping 77-year-old mentally ill granny

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that a man has been arrested for allegedly raping a mentally ill granny in Mwala, Machakos County.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Muema, was apprehended by detectives after he went into hiding following the incident which occurred last night in Ikuuni village, Kindaruma Sub Location.

According to the DCI, Muema had sneaked into the bedroom of the 77-year-old victim before being caught in the act by the victim’s son who had gone to check on his mother at around 11pm.

The son’s arrival prompted the suspect to flee, leading to a chase. However, the reportee was able to overpower the suspect, prompting him to call the police for assistance.

The police were able to locate the suspect in the wee hours of the morning, thanks to the trousers and akala (tyre-made sandals) that he left behind. Both the suspect and the victim were taken to Mbiuni level 4 hospital where medical tests confirmed that the victim had indeed been raped.

Muema is currently in custody and is being processed to face rape charges. The incident has shocked residents of Ikuuni village, who have called on the authorities to take stern action against perpetrators of such heinous crimes.

The DCI has urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity or persons to the police in order to help prevent such incidents from occurring.
