DCI issues update on arrests in Jeff Mwathi's case

The investigation into the death of 23-year-old interior designer Jeff Mwathi has entered the homestretch, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide department. Mwathi died on February 22, 2023, in unclear circumstances.

In a tweet on April 4, the DCI stated that extensive investigations into the matter have been conducted, including forensic analysis of CCTV footage and cyber analysis of digital data. The government pathologist’s report, which is expected to inform the final course of action, is currently pending.

The family of the deceased is hopeful that justice will prevail. The DCI has called for patience from the public and the family of the deceased as the investigations enter the homestretch.

On Friday, homicide detectives exhumed Mwathi’s body to collect more samples for toxicological analysis. The chief government pathologist, Johansson Odor, conducted a second autopsy and took samples to ascertain allegations of sodomy, as investigators suspected foul play.

Detectives also measured the width of Mwathi’s chest to ascertain if it was consistent with the dimensions at the crime scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he jumped off the 10th floor of the apartment building through a window.

The examination exercise took hours, with family members monitoring the process from afar in a delicate situation.

However, there was a standoff after a group of youth disagreed with detectives from the homicide department over whether the remains should be reburied immediately or taken to the morgue.

A confrontation also ensued as the public raised concern over the exercise, demanding transparency after media was denied access to the premises.

Mwathi’s remains were buried shortly after the court order following a five-hour exhibition process that paved the way for a second autopsy to be conducted.

Homicide detectives have retreated to write a report, which is expected to give direction.
