At least 20 people lost their lives in a horrific accident that occurred in Migori County on the morning of April 8, 2023. The incident happened when a lorry lost control and crashed into a boda boda stage, causing multiple fatalities and critical injuries to several others.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the driver of the lorry was speeding downhill towards the town and crashed into passers-by, motorists, and boda boda riders, before colliding with another lorry carrying sand. Had the second lorry not been there, the death toll could have been even higher. Residents reportedly rushed to rescue the victims, and police were called to manage the crowd and traffic.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio party, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, offering his sympathies and prayers for their fortitude during this difficult moment. The driver of the lorry was also among the critically injured.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that over 1,000 people have died in road accidents in Kenya between January and March 2023, with the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway being the most dangerous road in the country. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the government is taking measures to reduce these fatalities, including the implementation of cameras on highways, improved vehicle inspections, and road safety education for citizens.

As Kenya continues to grapple with the rising number of road accidents, the government’s efforts to improve road safety will be crucial in reducing the number of fatalities and ensuring that citizens can travel safely on the country’s roads. Below are some of the photos: Photo source: Courtsey
