Former CS intervenes in release Kasarani suspects accused of throwing woman off balcony

Karasani police are under scrutiny after releasing two men accused of throwing a woman off a balcony in their apartment.

Cynthia Mboya, a 26-year-old student, was allegedly thrown from the second floor of the apartment building by her boyfriend, Collins Kiptoo, and his cousin, Ian Kipkorir, following a scuffle on Sunday night.

Despite police finalizing all the necessary documentation to charge the suspects with attempted murder, the intervention of a former powerful Cabinet Secretary from Rift Valley allegedly led to the suspects’ release.

Police initially reported that Mboya had withdrawn her complaint against the two suspects. However, sources revealed that Mboya had withdrawn her complaint under duress after being taken from her hospital bed at a Catholic Mission health facility, where she was being treated, to Kasarani Police Station to withdraw the case. Despite being in extreme pain, Mboya was forced to write a statement and withdraw the case.

The suspects were released on Monday night and were issued a notice to attend the police station next Friday.

Mboya later stated that she was “not seriously injured and did not wish to pursue the case further,” in her statement withdrawing the complaint, a claim that detectives are still investigating. The suspects will be reporting to the police until investigations are completed.

An amateur video seen by People Daily shows members of the public interrogating Mboya as she writhed in pain and narrated what had happened.

According to Mboya’s statement to the police, she visited Kiptoo at the apartment, where a bitter argument ensued over infidelity issues, before the two moved to the balcony.

The heated argument led to Kiptoo and Kipkorir allegedly pushing her off the balcony, and she fell on the ground floor, injuring herself.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident and recorded statements from the victim, a female neighbour, and a caretaker, among others.

The suspects were later arrested and detained at the Kasarani Police Station following the incident.
