Tragedy struck at Oyuma trading centre in Suna East sub-county, as a five-year-old girl lost her life in a fatal accident involving a Migori County government-owned ambulance.
The incident was confirmed by the Migori County police Commander, Mark Wanjala. According to Wanjala, the driver of the ambulance was en route to Migori town when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the young girl who was playing on the verandah of their house at the trading centre.
The impact was so severe that the minor lost her life on the spot. Her body has since been moved to the Migori Level Four Hospital mortuary pending police investigations.
As of now, it is unclear what transpired before the fatal accident. Investigations are already underway, and the police commander assured the public that they will get to the bottom of the matter.
The driver of the ambulance was alone in the vehicle when the accident occurred. However, he sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention.
The county police commander has appealed to all road users to adhere to traffic rules and remain cautious to avoid accidents. The incident is a stark reminder of the need for road safety, especially during this time when the country is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The loss of a young life is always heartbreaking, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
